Type of Noise

Definition

System noise

Variability in judgements of the same case across an institution. Composed of level and pattern noise.

Level noise

Variability in the average level of judgments by different judges. The overall patterns of each judge compared to the overall patterns of all judges.

Pattern noise

Variability that reflects a complex pattern in the attitudes of individuals to particular cases. Judge x case interaction.

Stable pattern noise

A type of pattern noise. Variability that is repeatedly observed.

Occasion noise

A type of pattern noise. Variability that is due to transient effects.
